If you need help using eSword refer to the eSword website tutorials.
• Hover your mouse over the Strong’s numbers to see what the word means. Try to distinguish between actual meanings given and opinions offered: the meaning of a word appears after the :- symbol.
• How many times does the word “devil” appear in the Old Testament? Is this significant? Why?
• By referring to the Strong’s numbers, make a list of the different original Greek words that have been translated “devil”. What are their meanings?
• Look carefully at the way each different Greek word has been used in the text. How many kinds of “devil” are being spoken about.
• G1139 and G1140 are always used in particular circumstances. What are these circumstances? How are these words translated in more modern Bible versions?
• Try searching for G1228. Examine the different ways this Greek word has been translated. Compare different Bible versions if you can.
• Notice particularly the following passages:
• 1Timothy 3:11
• 2Timothy 3:3
• Titus 2:3
• Hebrews 2:14
What conclusions could be drawn from the way this word has been used and translated in these passages? Does this have implications for the way the word is used elsewhere? In particular, what is the significance of the last of these passages?
This is just a short study to help you think about this subject and you might be surprised by your findings. It’s well worthwhile spending more time going into it more deeply, indeed, sometimes a long and careful study might be necessary to come to a clear understanding of some Bible topics, this being one of such topics.
